A Real Diva Patti LabelleWikipedia ..The Free Enclyclopedia.
A diva (English pronunciation: /ˈdiːvə/, Italian: [ˈdiːva]) is a celebrated female singer. The term is used to describe a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, and by extension in theatre, cinema and popular music. The meaning of diva is closely related to that of "prima donna".
Urban Dictionary
A diva
1. a bitchy woman that must have her way exactly, or no way at all. often rude and belittles people, believes that everyone is beneath her and thinks that she is so much more loved than what she really is. selfish, spoiled, and overly dramatic.
2. a true diva will do anything to get what she wants.
3. Also known as a prima donna ("first lady"), and especially in an opera. Refers to the leading lady of the production. The male counterpart is the divo. Plural, including male and female singers, is "divi" (DEE-vee), or, if just female singers, "dive" (DEE-vay).
4. A talented but imperious female performer. Originally used to describe opera starts, the word is now commonly applied to female performers in virtually any medium.

Most women think that the way they dress , make up , or shoes and hand bags makes them a diva...
Wrong...The true definition of a Diva....Is a extremely talented female singer....Yes I said true definition...
Even in the updated Urban Dictionary says this and adds the street version...A bitchy woman ( read above)
So let me ask you this what are you trying to say about yourself when you claim to be a Diva...If your not a talented singer you are claiming to be the latter of the definitions....Yes I know some women will wear that with a badge of honor....But I ask you...What are you ????
I will go first...
I don't claim to be a Diva...And never would want to be put in that category unless you are referring to my talent to sing...
I AM ...A LADY, A MOTHER, A WOMAN THAT FEARS GOD.

interesting take on it...i tend to think that the definition of a diva is different depending on who you ask. yes, the "text book" definition is a singer...but to me a diva is ALL of what you mentioned; a DIVA is a lady, a wife, a woman who fears god...i would also add that a diva is basically a woman who has it FLAT GOING ON! god fearing - CHECK; educated - CHECK; classy - CHECK; liquidable assets - CHECK; looks good, smells good and exudes confidence like no other!!! i can go on and on. LOL
Well, I knew about the opera singer definition, but I think the term diva has definitely evolved to mean so much more. The dictionary may not have caught up with it yet. My friends call me a diva because I like to keep my hair, makeup, and fashion on point. Yet, I'm not superficial or demanding. In fact, my husband always tells me that I enjoy the simple things in life and am easily pleased. I think the term is used in many circles to simply refer to ladies who like to keep themselves together. I refer to my blog followers as divas because we discuss all things girly. Yet, I always do a daily devotion because I love God too! I just see it as a cute, flirty term for women that are girly girls, and I think over time it has lost a lot of its negative connotation.
That's my two cents! :-) XOXO
Thanks for your input Ladies....Please keep it coming
That is so funny that you would write a blog saying that because I was just listening to an interview that Beyonce did about the word “diva”. Well I don’t know if I would actually consider it an interview but her take on it was this. I am not a diva because the word is so misused but then she turns around a makes a song. So either she is contradicting herself or just know how to make her money. I totally agree with you on this one. We have real divas out there that don’t even want to take claim to the name because “non-divas” are using it. So until the dictionary do catches up I would think twice about calling myself a diva or being referred to as one.
Hey Traycee,
I think it depends on how you define the word but, I understand where you are coming from. The word has changed over time so it means different things to different people. Some think that the word means you are bitchy, others think that it means that you are girly..some people believe that it means that you are confident...in Beyonce's song "Diva" she says that "a diva is a female version of a hustla" so to her i guess it means workin hard by any means neccessary (i guess) so the word changes and evolves...personally I never refer to myself as a Diva...When someone asks me what am I, i will never say a Diva..that wouldn't even come to mind.. great post Traycee :) I hope a lot of people comment on this post..i would love to hear more responses
nice post! i know that "diva" is often used to describe someone who is full of themselves. but if I call myself a diva (or just sing beyonce's song lol) i am using the word interchangeably with "boss lady" ; ) it's a good thing!
I HEARD that, Traycee!! Thank you for sharing; that has really given me something(s) to consider...
I personally would not call myself a diva. No matter how much people try to give it a positive connotation to me it will always have a negative connotation. So I would not use that term. There are so many other words women can use to describe themselves. Must we all limit ourselves to being a "diva"??? I would call myself classy, smart, funny, silly, educated, intuitive, wise, beautiful, etc. . . . the list goes on and on. But NOT diva. If I use that word, then it's open interpretation for the world and they will either think that I'm confident, as some say, or that I'm a snobbish, stuck-up, bossy you-know-what.
